Flooding in Florida

With 59.21 inches of rainfall each year and flat terrain, Florida is more likely to flood than any other state in the U.S. Most insurance policies don’t cover flooding, so it’s important to look into Flood Insurance plans to ensure your home is protected in case of excessive rainfall or hurricanes.

Flood Insurance

Flood insurance is available through the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) or through private insurers. If your home is located in a special flood hazard area like Florida, an elevation certificate will need to be submitted with your application.

Private Insurers

Private insurance companies have entered the flood insurance market over the past several years. In some instances, you may be able to purchase flood insurance through the same insurance company that provides your homeowners’ coverage. Flood policies issued by private insurers must provide at least the coverage included in policies issued by the NFIP.

For general inquiries about the National Flood Insurance Program, call 877-336-2627, or contact your insurance agent.

Don’t Procrastinate

Normally, there is a 30-day waiting period before a flood insurance policy becomes effective with the National Flood Insurance Program unless the policy is purchased at the same time you purchase or refinance your home. Flood Insurance can be obtained from your local agent.
